AOC Calls for Socialist Universal Basic Income in Response to Coronavirus

The New York Democrat floats radical measures to tackle virus

Progressive congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called for a universal basic income in response to the spread of the coronavirus in the United States.

The New York Democrat tweeted on Thursday:

“This is not the time for half measures. We need to take dramatic action now to stave off the worst public health & economic affects.”

“That includes making moves on paid leave, debt relief, waiving work req’s, guaranteeing healthcare, UBI, detention relief (pretrial, elderly, imm).”

AOC message was a follow up to a “no-strings UBI programs” and universal healthcare.

“Some are taking [sic] about unemployment insurance, & while good it’s not nearly enough.,” she said.

“There are enormous sectors of our economy (tipped workers, freelance, shift workers) who may not be ‘unemployed’ but whose lives are still dramatically disrupted to the point of eviction, etc,” she added.

But as well as calling for socialist measures to tackle the virus, Ocasio-Cortez also politicized the outbreak by crying racism to those who avoided Asian restaurants.

AOC suggested those avoiding Chinese and Asian restaurants due to the coronavirus are racist during a bizarre video on Wednesday.

“Honestly, it sounds almost so silly to say, but there’s a lot of restaurants that are feeling the pain of racism,” Ocasio-Cortez said during an Instagram Live video.

“Where people are literally not patroning Chinese restaurants, uh, they’re not patroning Asian restaurants because of just straight up racism around the coronavirus.”

Other Democrats like Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) also called on Trump to cancel his massive campaign rallies because of the threat of the coronavirus.

Speier said the American public does not “have any confidence in the president,” saying Trump was responsible for “more and more people” who are “getting sick,” but unsurprisingly offered no evidence for her claims.

On Wednesday, Trump addressed the nation calling for Americans to put “politics aside, stop the partisanship among parties and unify as one nation and one family.”

“Each of us has a role to play in defeating this virus,” Trump said.
