Bernie Sanders: 2016 Election Was ‘Rigged,’ I Would’ve Beaten Trump

2020 hopeful weighed in on his election loss to Hillary Clinton in 2016

2020 hopeful Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders weighed in on his election loss to Hillary Clinton in 2016 claiming the system was rigged, according to an MSNBC interview.

Speaking to Kasie Hunt on MSNBC, Sanders said he would have beaten President Donald Trump if the election against Clinton not been “rigged against” him.

Sanders bowed out of the 2016 election just before the Democratic National Convention and endorsed Clinton for the presidency in her race against Trump.

“No, some people say that if maybe that system was not rigged against me I would have won the nomination and defeated Donald Trump,” Sanders said after being asked whether or not he hurt Clinton’s candidacy.

“That’s what some people say.”

Donna Brazile recently alleged that Clinton had been able to accomplish a “secret takeover” of the Democratic National Committee at the very beginning of the primary race, destroying Sanders’ chances of winning.

Sanders seems to agree with this idea and said he would have been able to beat Trump.

According to The Daily Caller: Sanders went on to say that he is a Democrat, although he has been outspoken about being for socialism throughout his campaign.

“Of course I’m a Democrat,” Sanders said.

“This is a democratic national convention – a Democratic primary here.”

This is a change of tune from his past, where Sanders has proudly admitted that he considers himself to be a socialist.

“When I ran for the Senate the first time, I ran against the wealthiest guy in the state of Vermont,” Sanders said in an interview with The Nation in 2015.

“He spent a lot on advertising — very ugly stuff. He kept attacking me as a liberal. He didn’t use the word ‘socialist’ at all, because everybody in the state knows that I am that.”

“I intend to be the Democratic nominee,” Sanders told Hunt Wednesday.

Just before Trump’s ‘2020 re-election campaign, Sanders called the president a “racist, sexist, homophobe and religious bigot.”

Speaking with MSNBC’s host Andrea Mitchell, Sanders was asked what he thought about Trump’s plan to live tweet the first Democratic debate next week.

“Look, he can tweet all that he wants to tweet, but let me just say this,” Sanders said in response.

“You have a president who, despite what one of his supporters mentioned a moment ago, is, in fact, a pathological liar, he is a racist, he is a sexist, he is a homophobe, and he is a religious bigot.”
