Catholic League Blasts ‘Fawning’ Media Hypocrisy Over Biden’s ‘Catholic Faith’

“Biden rejects the teachings of the Catholic Church on abortion’

Bill Donohue, the President of the Catholic League, decried the media’s hypocrisy over Joe Biden‘s “devout” Catholic faith.

Dr. Donohue noted in an essay that it is ok “for Catholics to bludgeon the Little Sisters of the Poor provided they carry a rosary.”

Donohue noted that “CNN ran a piece December 13 noting that Joe Biden goes to church, prays, and carries a rosary,” while observing puff pieces by America magazine, NPR, and The Washington Post.

Biden’s unapologetic rejection of the Church’s core moral teachings seems to be embraced by the left-wing media, who focus only on external trappings of the faith.

“Biden rejects the teachings of the Catholic Church on abortion — he has become an extremist — marriage (he even officiated at a gay wedding), foster care, gender ideology, healthcare, contraception, sterilization, religious liberty, and school choice,” Donohue observes.

He also underscores the sharp contrast between the media’s obsequious treatment of Biden’s faith, while they attack the Catholic faith of other public figures like Amy Coney Barrett.

Donohue said the media were “anything but kind” to Justice Barrett,

“Indeed, her ‘devoutness’ was a source of discontent, even rage in some quarters.”

“The moral of the story is plain: It is perfectly fine to be a Catholic public official just so long as he or she rejects the teachings of the Church on matters of public policy, even when those policies are life and death issues,” Donohue concludes.

Earlier this month, former Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput said Biden should be refused access to the sacrament of Holy Communion for committing a public sin.

Chaput argued that denying the former vice president Holy Communion would be the appropriate pastoral action, but he also acknowledged the exercising of prudence to avoid negative optics for the church.

“Public figures who identify as ‘Catholic’ give scandal to the faithful when receiving Communion by creating the impression that the moral laws of the Church are optional,” writes Chaput.

“And bishops give similar scandal by not speaking up publicly about the issue and danger of sacrilege,” he adds.

“Those bishops who publicly indicate in advance that they will undertake their own dialogue with President-elect Joseph Biden and allow him Communion effectively undermine the work of the task force established at the November bishops’ conference meeting to deal precisely with this and related issues,” he continues.

Earlier this year, a nun criticized Biden and his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), warning that the pairing makes “the most anti-life presidential ticket ever.”
