CNN Describes Baby Surviving Abortion as ‘Fetus That Was Born’ News Outlet faces backlas
Leftist news outlet CNN is facing backlash for their report on pro-life legislation were they described a baby surviving an abortion as a “fetus that was born.”
On Tuesday, Senators voted on pro-life legislation aiming to protect babies who survive after botched abortions, and also legislation that would make abortion illegal when the baby can feel pain at 20 weeks.
The legislations have been named the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.
The legislation on Tuesday was covered by CNN titled “Senate to vote on two abortion restriction bills,” which saw reporter Caroline Kelly described a surviving baby as a “fetus that was born.”
The term, “a fetus that was born,” has still yet to be clarified by CNN.
“The second bill to be considered Tuesday is the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, sponsored by Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, that would require abortion providers to work to ‘preserve the life and health’ of a fetus that was born following an attempted abortion as they would for a newborn baby, or face up to five years in prison,” Kelly wrote.
According to Pro-life advocates, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act isn’t about abortion, but about protecting the lives of babies already born.
“Before senators and journalists write this hearing off as another messy and long-standing fight about abortion policy, I want to humbly ask that we not retreat into the fortified and familiar trenches our parties have occupied for the past 47 years,” Sasse said.

even our pro-choice sisters and brothers should call this out as beyond the pale pic.twitter.com/DFvuoXMQaV

This CNN piece presents as different things “a fetus that was born following an attempted abortion” and “a newborn baby” https://t.co/s6wlOlyHYZ pic.twitter.com/MVoF24FOVE

This is absolute madness. A baby who survives an abortion is not a “fetus that was born.” It’s a baby! It’s a human! Of course medical practitioners should do everything in their power to save the child, why is this even a debate? https://t.co/2To1uchxVP

“A fetus that was born” is now politically correct language for “baby.” Baby is too politically loaded and implies that fetuses might in fact be a form of human life worthy of protection. https://t.co/YpXBXMZkVO

“This hearing is not about overturning Roe v. Wade,” Nebraska senator said.
“In fact, this hearing is not about limiting access to abortion at all.”
“This hearing isn’t a debate about first-, second- or third-trimester abortions.”
“This hearing is about making sure that every newborn has a fighting chance – whether she’s born in a labor and delivery ward or whether she’s born in an abortion clinic.”
According to The National Review, some media outlets are referring to the bill as anti-abortion legislation, seemingly suggesting the text says something different, that abortion rights include the right to let an unwanted infant die.
