The new law is aimed at ending discrimination against same-sex and transgender parents
A new amendment to the law which passed through parliament this week, French schools will be required to change the words ‘mother’ and ‘father’ to ‘Parent 1’ and ‘Parent 2.’
The new law is aimed at ending discrimination against same-sex, gender neutral and tans parents by removing the words ‘mother’ and ‘father.’
But critics have slammed the controversial legislation saying it “dehumanizes” parenthood and could lead to arguments over who gets classified as ‘Parent 1.’
The amendment, which was passed on Tuesday, is part of ongoing efforts to build a so-called “school of trust,” that will also force mandatory school attendance for all three years old.
“This amendment aims to root in law children’s family diversity in administrative forms submitted in school,” said Valérie Petit, MP for the majority REM party of President Emmanuel Macron.
“We have families who find themselves faced with tick boxes stuck in rather old-fashioned social and family models. For us, this article is a measurement of social equality.”
“I have already written that I’m particularly shocked and surprised at the ‘controversy’ around the parent/mother/Father forms,” Israeli-French former journalist Julien Bahloul, himself a same-sex parent, tweeted.
“The mother and father are parents, nothing insulting to that. In #TelAviv the forms were changed a long time ago without any worries.”
The new proposals for removing the terms “mother” and “father” is aimed at favoring inclusive; gender non-specific language has been debated since the legalization of same-sex marriage in France.
“When I hear people say this is an old-fashioned model, I would remind people that today among unions celebrated, civil or marital, some 95 percent are man-woman couples,” Conservative MP Xavier Breton said.

But fellow Conservative Fabien Di Filippo branded the proposed legislation as a “frightening ideology.”
But it is not just conservatives questioning the effectiveness of the new legislation.
Alexandre Urwicz president of the AFDH, the French association for same-sex parents, noted that the change could create “parental hierarchy.”
“Who is ‘parent number 1’ and who is ‘parent number 2’?” he asks, adding that conceivably the less controversial “father, mother and legal representative,” be used instead.
The amendment still might be rejected by the majority-Senate, but would be sent back to France’s National Assembly for further consideration.
Emmanuel Macron’s education reform now requires f
French schools are also required to fly EU flags in every classroom under Emmanuel Macron’s new education reform.
The reforms have already removed homework as a requirement from the curriculum and children will also have to memorize the chorus to La Marseillaise, the country’s national anthem.
Meanwhile, Germany is also proposing to implement ‘third gender’ bathrooms designed for ‘gender neutral’ children who don’t identify as boys or girls.
The proposal for the new ‘neutral’ bathrooms comes after an external school advisor proposed the concept, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports.
