Obama Accused of Lying About US Gun Laws: Anybody ‘Can Buy Machine Guns’

Former president faces backlash for false assertions on US gun laws

Former President Barack Obama slammed US gun laws on Thursday while speaking an event in Brazil by falsely telling his audience that ‘anybody can buy a machine gun.’

The gun laws “don’t make much sense,” Obama said before claiming anybody “can buy machine guns” while speaking at VTEX Day.

But contrary to what the former president told his audience in Brazil, regulations make it difficult for anyone to own a machine gun.

According to The Washington Free Beacon, its writer Stephen Gutowski highlighted the regulations after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting.

“First, the sale of new fully-automatic firearms was effectively banned in 1986 under the Hughes Amendment. Fully-automatic firearms that were registered under the National Firearms Act before 1986 were grandfathered in & are still legal,” Gutowski tweeted.

Obama made similar remarks in Brazil four years ago claiming it was “easier for you to buy a handgun and clips than it is for you to buy a fresh vegetable.”

Just a year later, he claimed, “it is easier for a teenager to buy a Glock than get his hands on a computer or even a book.”

At the event, Obama began by recalling the “most difficult day” in office was the aftermath of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

“My daughters were only a little bit older than these young children that have been shot, and I had to go and comfort the parents,” Obama said.

“And some of you may be aware of our gun laws in the United States don’t make much sense. Anybody can buy any weapon any time…”

“You know, without much, if any, regulation,” he continued.

“They can buy it over the Internet; they can buy machine guns. And for me, having to speak to parents who have lost a child, just two days or a day after it had happened, and not being able to assure them that that would change, that we would fix this — I couldn’t bring their children back, but I couldn’t even promise them that we would change the law so this didn’t happen to somebody else’s children.”

Obama was blasted on Twitter with many accusing him of “lying” about U.S. gun laws.

Dana Loesch, the Conservative radio show host, and NRA spokeswoman said “literally everything” Obama said was “false.”

On Friday, 2020 presidential hopeful Joe Biden announced his intentions to wage war against guns as part of his “education” plan for America.

Biden said that the National Rifle Association (NRA) must be defeated “to make our schools safer,” with a ban on semi-autos, Second Amendment columnist AWR Hawkins noted.
