Ocasio-Cortez Confronted Over Her Shutdown Paycheck, Replies ‘Gotta Run’

Progressive Democrat refuses to take her on advice on social media

New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has remained silent on whether she will heed her recent advice to lawmakers to “have some integrity” and surrender their salary throughout the government shutdown.

When the progressive Democrat was confronted by a reporter from the New York Post regarding her own salary, she simply replied: “I’ve gotta run.”

Ocasio-Cortez was in a rush to attend a mock swearing-in with newly elected House Speak Nancy Pelosi.

Ocasio-Cortez’ comments on social media during the beginning of the shutdown urging members to give up their salaries ‘like federal workers’ has now left her in a position to lead by example.

“Next time we have a gov shutdown, Congressional salaries should be furloughed as well,” she wrote in a tweet in December.

“It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision.”

“Have some integrity,” she concluded.

Ocasio-Cortez restated her statement saying “it’s only fair” that members of Congress would not get their paychecks during the shutdown

“Speaking as a working-class member-elect, I think it’s only fair. It would also cause members who actually depend on their salary to think twice about leadership and take a shutdown vote more seriously,” she said.

But it now looks that only a few Democrats followed Ocasio-Cortez advice.

Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono pledged to donate her salary to food banks in her home state.

“As long as Donald Trump refuses to reopen the government, I will be donating my salary to Hawaii’s food banks—who serve nearly one in eight Hawaii residents in need,” she told Hawaii News Now.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren promised to donate her salary to a Jewish charity

“Over 7,000 people in Massachusetts have been sent home or are working without pay during the #TrumpShutdown,” she wrote.

“Until @realDonaldTrump re-opens the government, I’m donating my salary to @HIASrefugees, a nonprofit that helps refugees and makes our country stronger in the process.”

Ocasio-Cortez was formally sworn into Congress last Thursday; her salary starts at $174,000 a year.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi enjoyed a luxury vacation at an exclusive resort in Hawaii over the holidays during the government shutdown
Pelosi was seen a vacation in Kona, Hawaii, and was seen there Thursday as well as Friday morning, Fox News confirmed.

Pelosi’s office has refused requests for comment from the press about her whereabouts.

President Trump canceled his plans to spend Christmas in Florida with his family, to instead remain in the White House to steer his country through the shutdown.
