Pelosi Backtracks: ‘We Have Never Not Said There Was a Crisis’ at the Border

Pelosi’s claims were contradicted by the words of various party leaders only months back

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrongly claimed that Democrats have “never” denied there is a “crisis” at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Pelosi’s claims were contradicted by the words of various party leaders only months back.

The House Speaker states during her weekly press conference in the Capitol Visitor Center:

“Well, let me just say this. We have never not said that there was a crisis — there is a humanitarian crisis at the border, and some of it provoked by the actions taken by the administration.”

“What is happening at the border is tragic, and we hope to address some of that in the disaster supplemental,” she added.

“And we understand our responsibility to secure our border.”

But Pelosi and other Democrats have previously said the situation at the border was a “manufactured crisis” by President Donald Trump.

In January, Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) accused Trump of using the “backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention.”

Additionally, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said following a visit to El Paso, Texas: “The first, most dramatic thing we found was there is no crisis.”

In January, the House Speaker clashed with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen during a presentation on border security, telling her, “I reject your facts.

Pelosi rubbished the key member of President Trump’s Cabinet’s presentation of hard facts firing Wednesday meeting in the White House amid the impasse over the government shutdown.

President Trump remained firm demanding $5 billion for the border wall.

In the meeting, Pelosi rudely interrupted Nielsen, who was presenting statistics and data relating to the border, which also included the number of criminal illegal immigrants attempted to enter the U.S. last year, according to the WSJ.

Pelosi also refused to negotiate with President Donald Trump on the Border wall proposal earlier this year, almost prompting another partial government shut down.

“There’s not going to be any wall money in the legislation,” Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters.

Despite some Democrats signaling some flexibility, namely spending $1.6 billion on ‘fencing’ spanning the pedestrian walkway in the Rio Grande Valley, Pelosi’s remarks seemed set on not negotiating.

Trump took to Twitter to reiterate his demands on the wall before telling reporters in the Oval Office that Pelosi is “just playing games.”
