Putin’s TV channels even refuse to broadcast the event
Russia has blasted the Royal wedding coverage by the British media saying it was “force feeding” the celebration to Westerners.
Putin’s TV channels even refuse to broadcast the event following recent tensions with the Salisbury poisoning.
Russian media appeared less than in impressed with the historic union of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with Russia state TV Channel One and Russia 24 refusing to broadcast the event.
Russian media outlet Russia Today (RT) ran the headline “BREAKING! Woman wears a dress: Royal wedding saturation sparks widespread fatigue”.
“The saturation coverage unleashed a flood of agitation from the great unwashed, who took to Twitter to vent their frustration at the fact that they were being force-fed a celebration of the petrified leftovers of a bloody empire with a disgraceful history.”
The express reports: It also referenced a tweet by Wikileaks which called the Royal Wedding “propaganda”.
Wikileaks tweeted: “There are approximately 5,000 media workers in London to cover UK establishment propaganda spectacle, the Royal Wedding.
“AP has joined the ranks of those being instrumentalized, describing a grandmother’s choice of alternate names for her grandson and his wife as breaking news.”
RT also claimed it was an attempt to force celebration
Both Channel One and Russia 24 broadcast the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in 2011, but Saturday’s celebration is said to have been blocked for “political reasons”.
The Russian government owns a majority share in both stations and neither gave a reason why they had decided not to show the royal wedding, the Sun reported.
Russian TV critic Irina Petrovskaya suggested the worsening of diplomatic relations in the wake of the Skripal poisonings was to blame.
Former double agent Sergi Skripal and his daughter Yulia were nearly killed when they were poisoned with a Russian-made nerve agent on March 5 which the UK blamed on the Russian state.
Irina Petrovskaya said: “This is an event that people will be watching simply for the reason it is beautiful.
Jeremy Corbyn suggested to an exasperated Twitter user to try RT
“I cannot see any other explanation for them to cancel the broadcast except for political reasons.
“The Skripal poisoning is still to be resolved.”
Moscow denied any involvement and claimed the poisoning had been staged as part of an anti-Russian fit-up.
But it seems some mainstream UK figures seem to enjoy the Russian coverage.
In 2011, Jeremy Corbyn suggested to an exasperated Twitter user to try RT to avoid the previous Royal Wedding.
A Twitter user said: “News is clearly going to be unwatchable for the rest of the week.”
To which Mr Corbyn replied: “Try Russia Today. Free of Royal Wedding and more objective on Libya than most.”
