President accused Democrats of engaging in a ‘fishing’ expedition
President Donald Trump suggested the idea of issuing subpoenas for records relating to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Barack Obama on Friday, asserting they have done similar probes into his own affairs.
The president accused Democrats of engaging in a “fishing” expedition by requesting various records related to the Trump family and businesses, during a pool spray in the Oval Office.
The House Judiciary Committee recently announced they are suing for the secret grand jury information contained in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, implying the information contained in the materials is the key to impeaching Trump.
“All [the Democrats] want to do is impede, and investigate — they want to go fishing — and I watched Bob Mueller, and they have nothing,” Trump said.
“We want to find out what happened with the last Democrat president.”
“Let’s look into Obama the way they looked at me from day one,” he continued.
“They’ve looked into everything that we’ve done. They could look into the book deal that President Obama made.”
“Let’s subpoena all of his records. Let’s subpoena all of the records having to do with Hillary Clinton and all of the nonsense that went on with Clinton and her Foundation.”
“We could do that all day long,” Trump warned.
“[Republicans] didn’t do what these people have done.”
The news comes despite concerns from many on the left that Mueller’s appearance during the hearings was faltering and broke little new ground.
Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) announced that the committee would file a petition in court on Friday as a significant next step.
The move aims to obtain grand jury materials from the former special counsel’s Russia Probe.
Trump blasted the Russia Probe as a “fake witch hunt.”
The president slammed the Democrats over Mueller’s investigation during an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity.
Hannity asked Trump about the importance of determining the origins of the special counsel probe.
Trump responded by arguing that this should not be allowed to happen to another president, describing it as “treason.”
